8 new lanthanide and actinide +2 ions with d<sup>1</sup> or d<sup>2</sup> valence electron configurations were discovered in the past 3 years. The properties and reactivity of these new ions differ radically from those of traditional lanthanide and actinide compounds. I will present spectroscopic, magnetic, structural, and theoretical evidence for the valence d electron configuration of these ions, and explain how they can be selectively stabilized by the ligand environment. I will present examples illustrating the rich and unusual coordination chemistry of the new ions.
