Multicomponent reactions (MCRs) can be used to create diverse chemical libraries. The dual Ugi-Smiles Diels-Alder process has provided an efficient, one-pot method for creating a variety of epoxyisoindoline compounds. Epoxyisoindolines were converted to aromatized isoindolines using acidic conditions. Both traditional heating methods and microwave synthesis methods proved successful. Current efforts are focused on Lewis-acid promoted ring opening reactions to prepare functionalized cyclohexene derivatives.
