In our group, bifunctional catalysts for alkene isomerization and alkyne hydration have been reported with excellent reactivity and selectivity 1. The ligands involved in these catalyst systems were monoimidazolyl- and monopyridylphosphines with either two phenyl or two alkyl substituents. Unexplored until now in this presentation has been the use of a series of electron deficient fluorinated phosphine ligands with electron withdrawing groups (e.g., CF3 groups) and their effect on the catalytic properties of bifunctional catalysts. Syntheses of the novel electron poor ligands, as well as the comparative studies of both the anti-Markovnikov hydration of terminal alkynes and alkene isomerization catalysis with the complexes of these ligands, will be part of this presentation. 1.Grotjahn, D.
