We have demonstrated a novel probing strategy employing antibody (anti-) and antigen modified gold nanoparticles to detect deoxynivalenol (DON). The conjugation of DON and anti-DON AuNPs inhibit the aggregation of anti-DON AuNPs and DON AuNPs, while no such inhibition is observed without DON. Colorimetric assays employing this mechanism for the detection of aggregation are sensitive and convenient—0.1 ppm of DON is readily detected with the naked eye, and a more quantitative detection limit of 1 ppb can be obtained using UV-vis spectroscopy.
