The indole structure represents a highly relevant heterocyclic system, which has attracted the attention of scientists as several natural and synthetic indole-containing compounds have been used in the treatment of various diseases [1]. Indole containing compounds have shown anti-inflammatory [2, 3], anticonvulsant [4], cardiovascular [5], antibacterial [6], and antiviral activities [7]. Schiff base analogues derived from indoline-2, 3-dione and 2-aminobenzoic acid and its tin complex showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus comparable to the standard drug Imipinem [8]. The Schiff base 4-chloro-2-(2-morphiolinoethylimino) methylphenolatomethanolchloro and its Zn(II) complex showed bactericidal activity similar to commercial antibiotics (Kanamycin and penicillin) against E. coli and P. fluorescence [9]. The Schiff base 3-(-1-(4-methyl-6-chloro)-2-pyrimidinyl imino)methyl-2-naphthol and its Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Mn(II) complexes were reported to have activity against cis-platin resistant 518A2 (melanoma), and cis-platin sensitive HL60(leukemia) cells [10]. This study reports the syntheses, characterization, and investigation of the electronic and antibacterial properties of the Schiff base 2[(E)-{1H-indol-5-ylimino}]-6-methoxyphenol and its Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Pd(II) complexes. The Schiff base 2[(E)-{1H-indol-5-ylimino}]-6-methoxyphenol (HL1) was synthesized from the condensation of 2-hydroxy-3-methoxysalicaldehyde and 5-aminoindole. HL1 was characterized spectroscopically (IR, UV-Vis, NMR) and magnetic susceptibility. Its complexes with Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Pd(II) were synthesized and characterized. The various metals coordinated to either one or two of the bidentate Schiff base ligands (HL1). The antibacterial activities of the metal complexes against several bacterial lines (E. coli, Bacillus subtillis, Klebsiella oxytoca, Proteus mirabilis, Psedomona aeruginosa, Staphyloccus aureus) were determined, using streptomycin as the control standard. The Ni(II) complex showed the highest activity (65% compared with streptomycin) against Bacillus subtilis, with all metal complexes showing greater antibacterial activity than the free ligand, HL1. The results of this study will be presented.
