The targeted delivery of drugs directly into cells benefits from the nanoscale design of the pharmaceutic vehicles. The designed cell targeting nanocontainers have to be biocompatible and provide an effective drug encapsulation, in addition, the stimuli-responsive coating should be triggered by cytoplasmic factors, preferably enzymes. Here we demonstrate the selective drug delivery into human cells with biocompatible 50-nm diameter clay nanotube carriers (Figure 1). We have developed a new platform using brilliant green dye having anticancer activity (loaded into nanotubes lumen) along with dextrin employed as nanotube ends capping substance [1]. These halloysite nanotubes penetrate through the cellular membranes and their uptake efficiency depends on the cells growth rate (Figure 2). Intercellular glycosyl hydrolases decomposition of the dextrin tube-end stoppers triggers the release of the lumen-loaded drug (brilliant green) which allowed for preferable elimination of human alveolar basal epithelial cells (A549) as compared with human hepatoma cells (Hep3b). The system presented here is exceptionally simple, versatile, cheap and biocompatible. Acknowledgement.
