The Claisen rearrangement is an industrially powerful organic reaction, with the ability to form a new sigma carbon-carbon bond and hydroxyl group when applied to allyl phenyl ethers. Traditionally, this is performed as a batch reaction, either at high temperatures or in the presence of a catalyst. However, the Claisen rearrangement can also be achieved in a bench-top flow reactor; the inductively heated reactor quickly reaches high temperatures, and tunable parameters such as pressure and flow rate allow the reaction to be closely regulated. Here, the results of flow reactions of three ally phenyl ethers with different substitutions—an acetyl group, chlorine, and methyl acetate—will be discussed.
