Macrocyclic ligands provide rigid yet flexible binding sites that can be used to selective recognition of guests species.1, 2 Bipyridine bis-urea macrocycles, designed and synthesized by our group serve as potential candidate to recognize metal ions depending on their type and size.3 Here, we investigate the use of a bipyridine bis-urea macrocycle as a bridging ligand (μ-L) in the presence of bulky cis-bis(2,2'-bipyridine) dichlororuthenium(II) hydrate to facilitate the formation of a homo di-nuclear exo-complex (1). We report the X-ray structure of the complex [(bpy)2RuLRu(bpy)2]Cl4●6H2O, which separates the two Ruthenium atoms by 7.29 Å. The electrochemistry and photophysical properties of this new complex was characterized. It was further applied as a photosensitizer to facilitate the electronically mismatched Diels-Alder reaction of isoprene and trans-anethole using visible light.4 References: 1. Beer, P.
