Biomimetic nanofiber scaffolds for tissue engineering have been designed by introducing various bioactive molecules into the surface of nanofibers. Previously, we successfully produced an acidic shell matrix protein originated from Pinctada fucata in E. coli by recombinant protein approach (named as rBA). In the present study, we utilized the recombinant acidic shell matrix protein for this achievement. Novel composite nanofibers based on chitosan and rBA were fabricated, and the surface was modified based on calcium carbonate biomineralization. The morphology of the electrospun nanofibers was basically observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Mechanical and biological properties were investigated for the application as a tissue engineering scaffold. We expect that our newly fabricated rBA-based nanofiber scaffold can be used as a functional tissue engineering scaffold for efficient osteoblast cell culture.
