Photophysical studies that outline correlation between structure of chromophore and its photophysical behavior are of predominant interest as they facilitate design of novel chromophores tailored for organic photovoltaic applications. Herein, we report design, synthesis and photophysical properties of newly prepared organic push-pull chromophores (N-Carbazolyl Benzoates), exhibiting tunability of emission color and emission quantum yields in both solution and solid state. Tuning of emission is achieved by varying solvent polarity (in solution) and chromophores packing (in solid-state). Solution-state and solid-state emission is fully characterized with steady-state and time-resolved techniques. We ascribe a large red shift of emission that is observed in solution upon increasing solvent polarity to the formation of intramolecular charge-transfer state (ICT), with support of excited-state geometry calculations and transient absorbance measurements. In addition to solution state positive solvatochromism, we report dual emission of N-Carbazolyl Benzoates in solid, consisting of both fluorescence and phosphorescence components. Remarkably, phosphorescence is observed at room temperature. We outline correlation between lifetimes and type of emission (short-lived <i>vs</i> long-lived), emission quantum yields and regiochemistry of carbonyl.
