Thermal runaway imposes tough challenges to large-scale, high-energy lithium-ion batteries. While various battery thermal management systems (BTMS) have been developed for regular normal conditions, in unpredictable events, e.g. when the battery is damaged, internal shorting may occur, resulting in a rapid heat generation. Since the electrolytes are volatile and highly flammable, it is desirable that even in the most adverse situation, thermal runaway can be mitigated.<br/>In order to prevent rapid temperature increase, the internal resistance of battery cell should be raised, so as to suppress the exothermal reactions. We have identified aluminum acetylacetonate as an additive. As 2.5 wt% aluminum acetylacetonate is added in the electrolyte, the cell capacity nearly completely vanishes at 100 C and accordingly, the electrode reactions are shut down. The effect of aluminum acetylacetonate on the battery charge-discharge performance under normal working condition is quite mild.
