Recent studies of rare earth magnetism have shown that paramagnetic lanthanides bridged by radicals can be single-molecule magnets with high blocking temperatures. For example, [K(18-crown-6)(THF)2]{[(R2N)2(THF)Tb]2(μ-η2:η2-N2)}, which contains two Tb3+ ions bridged by an (N2)3- radical, has a blocking temperature of 14 K. In efforts to diversify the types of radical-bridged bimetallic rare earth metal complexes available for single-molecule magnet studies, the synthesis of complexes of the form [Cp*2Ln(μ-S2)M(μ-S2)LnCp*2]1- (M = Mo, W; Cp* = η5-C5Me5) has been pursued. Initial studies were conducted with diamagnetic yttrium to aid in characterization. The synthesis and structure of Cp*2Y(μ-S2)Mo(μ-S2)YCp*2 will be described as well as its reduction to a compound with an EPR spectrum consistent with Mo5+. The isolation of a series of related asymmetric mono-base adducts of formula Cp*2Ln(μ-S2)M(μ-S2)Ln(L)Cp*2 (Ln = Y, Dy, Tb; M = Mo, W; L = NH3, MeCN) will also be reported.
