In this paper, the research progress of compounding method using pristine clay and commercialized rubber latex to produce clay/rubber nanocomposites, namely latex compounding method, is summarized. Latex compounding method is a low-cost and easily controlled process, and quite promising to be industrialized. There are three keys for this method: 1.clay could be nano-dispersed in water medium, and form stable clay/water suspension; 2. improving dispersion and interface interaction through in-situ modification; 3.suitable drying way to obtain final nano-structure and avoid breaking the rubber molecular. Based on 20 years work [1-8], we first have established ten thousand tons production lines of clay/SBR and clay/NR masterbatch respectively in china. Due to the superior gas barrier property, clay/SBR masterbatch is used to prepare inner liner in truck and bus radial tires and off the road tires, instead of XIIR with high performance and low cost. Take 12R22.5 tire as an example, the air loss of inner liner based on clay/SBR masterbatch is 1.14% per month and the cost is cut down 6 RMB per tires compared with BIIR. Clay/SBR could also simple the mix procedure and save energy. Due to outstanding anti-fatigue properties and improved cut and chip resistance, clay/NR is used to prepare tread in truck and bus radial tires and off the road tires, instead of natural rubber smoked sheet with high performance and long-life properties. Take 11.00R20 as an example, through road test under severe conditions, the service life of the tread based on clay/NR masterbatch has been prolonged more than 25% compared with commercial NR.
