Amino-acid based ionic liquids (AAIL) are known to selectively and reversibly absorb CO2. Supported ionic liquids (SILP) can thus be used to for e.g. CO2 removal from flue gases of thermal power plants or to upgrade biogas to yield pure CH4. SILPs are thus a potential alternative to the industrially used CO2 absorption by amines. The SILP technology generally has the following advantages over the amine scrubbers: (i) It is a modular technology which makes capacity adjustments easier to be realized; (ii) no toxic solvents are emitted; (iii) CO2 removal is also efficient at low (&lt; 1 vol.%) concentrations. Efficient removal of low levels of CO2 can be a significant advantage when improving indoor air quality in order to minimize ventilation- and thus heating- or cooling-needs. Reduced heating- or cooling-needs will in many locations translate into less burning of fossil fuels and thus help to reduce global warming. The most obvious areas of application are highly frequented public spaces like e.g. schools, universities, shopping centers, airports etc. Besides removing CO2, many AAILs are known to be hygroscopic and might also be able to absorb volatile organic compounds (VOC). Adjustment of moisture levels and removal of VOCs are other factors in determining the ventilation needs. Hence we believe that simultaneous removal of CO2, VOCs and excess moisture might be realized using a SILP based system. In our study we will prepare SILPs by impregnating mesoporous extrudates with AAILs. Absorptions of the individual compounds (CO2, water and VOC model compounds) at relevant concentrations as well as combinations thereof will be studied. The desorption-dynamics will be studied at several temperatures as well as the long-term thermal stabilities of the AAILs at those temperatures.
