1,3-dienes are versatile intermediates in organic synthesis and present in many natural products. Cross-coupling approaches to 1,3-dienes typically rely upon a vinylmetal reagent, which can be inconvenient to synthesize and handle. We recently reported a new strategy, the coupling of a vinyl bromide with a vinyl triflate, catalyzed by a synergistic combination of nickel and palladium However, this single example required excess substrate and elevated temperature to achieve a high yield. We have recently discovered a new combination of nickel and palladium catalysts that is capable of coupling a variety of vinyl bromides with vinyl triflates in high yield (up to 90% yield) at room temperature without the need of an excess of either coupling partner.
