Efficient catalysis used in modern synthesis can be attributed greatly to rare/expensive metals. Phosphorus is an earth abundant and inexpensive element that has been explored for its catalytic effects. By distorting the classical C3v symmetric trigonal pyramidal geometry to planar C2v or bent Cs geometries, it was found unlock new modes of reactivity. An N,N,N and O,N,O substituted complexes have been established to activate N-H and O-H bonds. By synthesizing an electronically differentiated S,N,S additional modes of phosphorus activity may be achieved.
