The odor concentrations and the VOC concentrations of components in the model tobacco smoke and environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) gas samples were measured, and correlations of the concentrations were examined. The model tobacco smoke gases were prepared in a plastic bag, and the ETS gas samples were collected in a smoking area under conditions with different number of smokers. The odor concentration was determined as the minimum dilution ratio, N, at which the odor is not detected and the VOC concentration of the components were measured with the PTR-MS. The correlation between the odor concentration and the concentration of each component was evaluated by the determination coefficient, and it was found that the components with smaller molecular weights showed better correlation compared with the component with larger molecular weights. The correlations of some identified components such as acetaldehyde showed a higher determination coefficient, while nicotine showed poorer correlation. Although all the key components determining the odor of the tobacco smoke were not clearly determined, the present study demonstrated that some components such as acetaldehyde would highly contributed to the odor concentration.
