Zero-valent magnesium (ZVMg) was tested as a reductant for the removal of Cr(VI) from water. We examined the kinetics of ZVMg dissolution and of Cr(VI) reduction by ZVMg in a simple electrolyte solution (10 mM NaCl) with 50 mM MOPS buffer at pH 7 with varying doses of reactants. The dissolution of ZVMg obeyed a first order kinetics with respect to [Mg0]0 with a rate constant, kMg = 1.05 ± 0.08 min-1. Cr(VI) was effectively removed from solution via reduction not by ZVMg but by an intermediate product of ZVMg-water interaction. The kinetics of Cr(VI) reduction was rapid and followed a fractional order (n = 0.19) with respect to [Cr(VI)]0 and the observed rate constant was determined as kobs = 7.36 Χ 10-2 M0.81min-1. The results showed a potential that ZVMg may be employed as an effective reductant for the treatment of various redox-sensitive contaminants.
