Abstract Upconverting Nanoparticles (UCNPs) are intensively investigated for their application as innovative theranostic agents. They combine multimodal imaging (e.g. MRI, PET) capability with exceptional optical features. UCNPs convert near infrared photons into UV-visible light which can be exploited to activate prodrugs.1,2 In this contribution, we report our latest developments on new Gd-based UCNPs with bisphosphonates which function as MRI and PET probes for bone targeting and drug delivery. Moreover, we highlight the potential of UCNPs as near infrared phototriggers for the light activation of transition metal complex prodrug candidates.3,4 References 1.
