Chemically-contaminated groundwaters can be cleansed using In-Situ Chemical Oxidation (ISCO), but mineral precipitation, high permeability zones, and low permeability zones negatively affect the efficiency of ISCO treatments. Because of this, a real-time monitoring tool is needed to ensure that the oxidant reaches the contamination plume. One possible approach is the use of <i>in-situ</i> fiber optic sensing which provides a 0.02°C resolution and detects the heat generated from the oxidation of natural organic materials and contaminants. Standard heats of oxidation for characterized soils must be established for different ISCO oxidants in order to use such fiber optic sensing. In recent work we have used solution calorimetry to determine the standard heat of oxidation for both persulfate and permanganate oxidizers. The enthalpy of oxidation for various soils is determined and the values are correlated with soil characterizations. On average, the heats of oxidation of characterized soils are larger for permanganate than for persulfate. The reported heats of oxidation would allow <i>in-situ</i> fiber optic sensing to locate and determine the amount of chemical contamination that is cleaned during ISCO treatment.
