In spite of the known advantages of solar advanced oxidation processes, the main drawback is still the cost, which is closely related to the volume of water treated per unit of time and per unit of surface. To solve this problem, raceway ponds reactors were proposed as a feasible technology for micropollutant removal by solar photo-Fenton, where liquid depth and iron concentration are the two operating variables that determine the process rate. The fact of using short light paths and low light absorbing species concentration gave rise to small optical densities and consequently an inefficient use of the photons reaching the reactor surface. Additionally, reaction rate saturation at increasing irradiances was observed. In this line, a kinetic model has been developed to predict micropollutant removal rates as a function of environmental variables (irradiance and temperature), geometrical variables (light path length) and operating variables (catalyst concentration) in raceway ponds reactors.
