We report a study of the sonochemical synthesis of alloyed superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SPMNs) using metal salts and lithium naphthalide as the reducing agent. Sonochemistry is the application of high-intensity ultrasound to drive reactions by acoustic cavitation involving the formation, growth, and high-energy implosion of bubbles in a solution. The temperatures involved during cavitation collapse often are greater than 5000K in organic solvents, while the typical collapse time (&lt;100ps) does not allow time for formation of particles of sizes greater than a few nanometers. Consequently, the resulting magnetic materials are superparamagnetic in their behavior. Unlike other nanomaterials, which are often core-shell in nature, elements that make up sonochemically-prepared SPMNs are intimately mixed at the atomic level. This reduces the potential for erosion or exfoliation, making the synthesis of these SPMNPs greener than other technologies being used to produce similar alloys. This study is primarily concerned with the synthesis of SmCo5, MnBi, and Nd2Fe14B nanoparticles. The SPMNs are spherical and &lt;10nm; stoichiometry is controlled via the bulk stoichiometric addition of reagents. The SPMNs are characterized using PXRD, TEM, EDX, and variable-temperature magnetometry.
