Learn how one community college is investigating the efficacy of providing authentic Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) research opportunities to its students.<br/><br/>Students working with scientists in laboratory settings have been documented as a means to advance along a pathway towards STEM careers. Similarly authentic research provides focus for their pathway. Sadler et al, 2010 recently cited gains in career aspirations; Nature of science; Scientific content knowledge; Confidence and self-efficacy; Collaboration; Intellectual and skills development.<br/><br/>Since 2007, Suffolk County Community College has been leveraging local, state, NSF and business and industry resources to provide summer research internships for our STEM students. Our current research is examining the impact of these enhanced student experiences on their continued progression through their academics and career aspirations. This presentation will describe the results of our research to date and implications for STEM education.
