Inexpensive anilines, aldehydes, and alkynes bearing a variety of substituents are combined with a catalyst in a vial and heated to provide alkyl quinolines or 2-(2'-pyridyl)quinolines in one step. Both green reactions proceed without solvent, ligand, co-catalyst, or inert atmosphere. As an added bonus, the syntheses of substituted bipyridyl analogs requires only filtering, concentrating, and rinsing with hexanes. This contrasts with known methods that require multiple step syntheses, chromatography, bifunctional starting materials, or halide and tin cross coupling partners.
