Solvent-, metal-, and chromatography-free catalysis provides 4-phenyl-2-(2’-pyridyl)quinoline (PyQuin) ligands bearing electron-rich to -poor substituents in a single step. Such a modular synthesis from inexpensive starting materials will allow for rapid tuning of structure and function. As more hindered variants of 2,2’-bipyridine (bpy), PyQuins can enforce a different geometry around the metal center than bpy. A series of PyQuin gold(III) complexes have now been synthesized and studied by NMR spectroscopy and x-ray crystallography.
