Truxillic acid derivatives have been well known candidates for being anti-inflamatory agents. Biological studies of cyclobutane dicarboxylic acids have been limited due to their poor solubility in organic medium. Exploiting a new synthesized efficient route to access unsaturated carboxylic acids we have prepared a series of tetra-substituted cyclobutanes. The cyclobutane derivatives have been obtained using a solid-state photochemical dimerization reaction in near quantitative conversions. Herein, we will disclose our efforts toward synthesis of these potential biologically active tetra-substituted cyclobutanes.
