This work focusses on making a family of catanionic fluorosurfactants and determining their surface properties. A solvent-free microwave synthesis was developed to make the precursor 1-methyl-3-fluoroalkylimidazolium iodides in high yields and with good selectivity. This synthesis offers a quick, reliable, and scalable method for the production of these materials, paving the way towards a new suite of fluorosurfactants. The surface properties, including surface tension, contact angle, critical micelle concentration, and Krafft point were measured and found to be in line with commercially available fluorosurfactants. This family of fluorosurfactants were used as an additive in an ink formulation and the levelling properties and coffee ring effect were explored.
