Deep-eutectic solvents (DESs) are a new generation of green solvents comprised of a eutectic mixture through hydrogen bond donor (HBD) and ammonium or phosphonium salts interactions. DESs are amenable systems with many desirable features including low cost, biocompatibility, high stability, and are easy to prepare. This study demonstrates the formation and polymerization of high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) carbon-based nanocomposites with (meth)acrylic or styrenic monomers as a continuous phase and urea–choline chloride or glycerol-choline chloride deep-eutectic solvent as a favorable nonaqueous internal phase. Successful carbon nanotube delivery onto the matrix was achieved through the functionalization of multiwalled carbon nanotubes and the hydrogen-bonding nature of DESs. After recovery of DES, the resultant poly(HIPEs) showed interconnected macroporosity which can be tuned by varying the experimental conditions. Resulting nanocomposites showed improved performance and enhanced thermal conductivity.
