Ionic liquid-liquid separations, in which at least one phase is an ionic liquid, represents a new philosophy for the separation of organic, inorganic and bio-based materials, using the principles of modern countercurrent chromatography. A custom-designed instrument has been developed and constructed specifically to work with ionic liquids, and has been demonstrated on the 0.1 to 10 g scale. Separations which have been demonstrated include transition metal salts, arenes, alkenes, alkanes, bio-oils and sugars, and these will be described during the presentation.
