A series of mixed sandwich complexes of the type [Co(9S3)(CpR)](X)2 or [Co(9N3)(CpR)](X)2, where 9S3 = 1,4,7-trithiacyclononane, 9N3 = 1,4,7-triazacyclononane, CpR = cyclopentadienyl (Cp) or pentamethylcyclopentadienyl (Cp*), and X = BF4, ClO4, or PF6, have been prepared and characterized. These complexes are readily prepared by refluxing [Co(CpR)(I)2(CO)] with 1 equivalent of either 9S3 or 9N3 followed by metathesis with either [nBu4N]X or AgX, respectively, in ethanol. The complexes are vividly colored orange for [Co(9Y3)(CpR)](X)2 where Y = S and R = Cp* or Y = NH and R = Cp or Cp*, and red for Y = S and R = Cp. All complexes have been characterized by 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy as well as elemental analysis, and structures of [Co(9S3)(Cp)](PF6)2 and [Co(9N3)(Cp*)](PF6)2 were obtained via single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Details on the preparation and characterization of these complexes will be presented, which will include: multi-nuclear NMR, spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, and anion effects observed in the 1H-NMR. Comparisons to respective homoleptic bis-9S3, 9N3, Cp, and Cp* complexes will be made.
