Porphyrin donor-acceptor sensitizers are used in photovoltaics, photocatalysis and photodynamic therapy applications due to their increased intramolecular electron delocalization, red light absorption, longer excited state lifetimes and their ability to influence charge generation, electron transfer rates, and two photon absorption. The objective of this study is to synthesize new acceptor–donor–acceptor (ADA) sensitizers with a single porphyrin donor and two thiazolothiazole acceptor units. The donor and acceptor units will be coupled through an ethynyl bridge in order to maintain structural rigidity, planarity and conjugation of the system. Thiazolothiazole is a fused heterocyclic electron-deficient ring that shows good thermal and oxidative stability as well as high free-charge carrier mobilities. The photophysical properties of these ADA sensitizers is presented using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, steady state emission, time correlated single photon counting, a multi-pulsed time resolved delayed fluorescence technique to analyze triplet-triplet annihilation and quantum yield calculations.
