S. pneumoniae is the leading cause of vaccine-preventable death in children younger than five throughout the world with the majority of deaths occur in developing countries. With the introduction of pneumococcal vaccines great progress has been made in reducing infections caused by S. pneumoniae. Here we report our efforts to chemically synthesize constructs of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 8, an emerging serotype in Spain and North Africa, using two differentially functionalized iduronic acid monosaccharides. We also provide a brief report into our research on the role of maternal pneumococcal vaccinations and their contributions to fetal protection, with an emphasis on the challenges of administering charged serotypes such as pneumococcal serotype 8.
