Substances incorporating the azulenic motif (a nonbenzenoid aromatic framework involving fused 5- and 7-membered carbon rings) have been gaining increasing interest in the design of advanced materials. Because of its remarkably low aromatic delocalization energy and asymmetric current/voltage characteristics, the azulenic moiety is particularly attractive as a charge transport mediator on the molecular scale and as a critical component in molecular switching systems. This poster presentation will highlight the synthetic design, preparation, and characterization of two mercaptoazulene-based p-conjugated molecular linkers as well as address our efforts in assessing their redox behavior and electron delocalization capabilities in the context of electron-rich organometallics. In particular, the chemistry of the first aromatic p-linker featuring mercapto and isocyano junctions within the same molecule will be discussed. In addition to organic, coordination, and organometallic syntheses (including air-free manipulations), this NSF-REU project involved acquisition and interpretation of original electrochemical, spectroscopic (UV-vis, NMR, FTIR), and magnetism data.
