Reactions of aromatic aldehydes with pyrroles containing fused naphthyl and isoquinyl groups under mild conditions; in the absence of solvent, leads to a new class of dipyrromethenes. This new class dipyrromethenes display intense absorptions in the visible region of the spectrum (500-550 nm) with molar absorptivities in the tens of thousands. Coordination of Ru(II) polypyridyl groups to peripheral nitrogens of the isoquinyl dipyrromethenes show interesting photophysical and electrochemical properties shifting the absorption into the photodynamic window (600-850 nm). Photo-induced reactions of these complexes show complete photocleavage of plasmid DNA when irradiated under low energy light.
