Reactions of alkenes catalyzed by Brønsted acid sites are important in many petrochemical processes, for example, the isomerization, oligomerization and cracking of olefins in the methanol to olefin process. Double bond isomerizaton and oligomerization occur at temperatures near ambient where gravimetric and calorimetric measurement of adsorption, and of reaction by infrared spectroscopy, are facilitated. Using comparative reference zeolites silicalite, on which neither isomerization or oligomerization occur, and ferrierite, on which double bond isomerization but not oligomerization occurs, allow the elementary steps of n-pentene adsorption and reaction on ZSM-5 to be quantified. In particular, the conversion of π-bonded pentene to alkoxy species (pentoxide) was studied and the rate, activation energy and enthalpy of penoxide formation from π-bonded pentene were determined in the range 304 - 333K.
