We recently reported the syntheses and characterization of a new class of non-PNP based ligands and their metal complexes that promote C=O bond hydrogenations.1 These systems represent attractive alternatives to PNP pincer based analogs as these lattter ligands tend to be difficult to make, are oxygen sensitive and are limited to having only a two carbon linker between donor atoms. Our ligands address some of these negatives and also appear to offer more flexibility in terms of the variety of metal coordination chemistries that they can support. In this presentation, we will describe more recently developed ligands and metal complexes and present their versatility in homogeneous hydrogenation catalysis. We will also offer some perspective about their modes of catalytic reactivity that challenge the current and widely held view of “metal-ligand bifunctional catalysis”. References (1) (a) P. A.
