The interests of our group have focused on the modification and coordination chemistry of water-soluble phosphine 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (PTA) and derivatives. Upper-rim PTA modification to make chiral PTA derivatives can be synthesized by lithation of α- methylene group adjacent to phosphorus affording 1, 3, 5- triaza- 7- phosphaadamantan- 6- yllithium (PTA- Li) . Highly water-soluble pyridyl PTA derivatives (PTA-CH(2-py)OH, PTA-CH(3-py)OH, and PTA-CH(4-py)OH) have been synthesized by reacting PTA-Li with various of pyridinecarboxaldehydes. The synthesis, structures, and characterization of PTA derivatives via 1H and 31P{1H} NMR, ESI-MS, and single-crystal X-ray analysis, will be discussed. The coordination chemistry of these pyridyl PTA derivatives to a series of Ru(II) arene complexes, including monodentate κ1- P and bidentate κ2- P, N binding modes also will be described. The potential of these air-stable and water-soluble Ru(II) arene complexes as catalyst for aqueous phase nitrile hydration is investigated.
