Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have become powerful porous materials for various catalytic and molecular adsorption applications. Many of these frameworks are however limited in application due to poor water stability. In order to address this issue, we have examined the opportunity to post synthetically modify Cu3(NH2btc)2 ultimately expanding the scope of this water unstable copper MOF. The ability to modify the MOF without degrading the MOF's structure is critical to the modification. We have investigated the formation of both an amide and a carbamate and thoroughly examined the resultant impact on water stability. Samples were analyzed via PXRD, SEM, Water Contact Angle, IR, MS and 1H-NMR before and after modification and after exposure to water. This method shows promising results for increasing the water stability of Cu3(NH2btc)2.
