Quinolinyl arylsulfonamides when coordinated to metals have applications in catalysis and DNA nuclease activity. Reaction of sulfonyl chlorides with 8-aminoquinoline derivatives under microwave conditions yield a bidentate ligand that has been applied in coordination chemistry. To date, ligands possessing electronically varied substituents at the para-position of the sulfonyl aryl group (R = H, Me, and NO2) have been synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR and IR spectroscopy. Coordination complexes possessing two p-nitro(quinolinyl)benzenesulfonamide ligands synthesized from first row divalent acetates (Co, Cu) and chlorides (Ni, Zn) are described here. X-ray structures have been determined for the Cu and Zn complexes at 300 K. However, further structural characterization has been conducted on the Cu and Zn complexes and differences in single crystal X-ray diffraction results for the copper and zinc complexes containing the p-nitro(quinolinyl)benzenesulfonamide ligand at 100 K will be described. The magnetic properties of the copper and cobalt complexes containing the p-nitro(quinolinyl)benzenesulfonamide ligand were studied to support the oxidation states reported in the literature. Preliminary results obtained from Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS) (from 2K to 300 K) and determination of the magnetic moment using an Evans Balance at room temperature showed the copper complex is diamagnetic in the solid state. Further magnetic studies including the Evans NMR method will be performed to corroborate these results. The electrochemistry of the p-nitro(quinolinyl)benzenesulfonamide ligand and copper complex have been evaluated to investigate possible redox chemistry occurring between the copper and the ligand. Progress towards the application of iridium complexes containing quinolinyl aryl sulfonamides in transfer hydrogenation under microwave conditions is also described.
