Thyme is used as a herb and is sold to retail consumers by a variety of vendors in both whole leaf and ground forms. GC-MS analysis of room temperature ethanol extracts has revealed that these products which are all presumed to be from the <i>Thymus vulgaris</i> plant have varying volatile component compositions and represent two different different chemotypes. The predominant component of the extracts for some products is thymol as would normally be expected. However, other samples contained low levels of thymol and borneol was the most abundant component. The level of p-cymene in the extracts also varied considerably.
