Two of the main problems on Earth are the rising cases involving cancer and the dwindling fossil fuels reserves. As such, we have developed some promising compounds which have been shown to inhibit cell growth of cancer cells through the use light in a photodynamic therapy.  We have also developed some novel complexes that bear a photosensitizer (a ruthenium(II) metal center) and a catalytic metal center [Co(II)], all in one molecule, for the production of hydrogen, which can be used as an alternative energy source without any reliance on fossil fuels; only with light from the renewable sunlight.  As such, the main theme of this talk will feature how Prof. Karen J. Brewer (R.I.P.) has shaped me as a postdoctoral fellow in carrying out research with ruthenium(II)-containing complexes as photosensitizers in anti-cancer studies, and later as an independent researcher with the use of ruthenium(II) and non-ruthenium(II) complexes of d- and p-block elements in the fight against cancer; along with some mechanistic studies of cobalt(II)-containing complexes for the production of hydrogen in various solvents.<br/>
