Metal nanoparticles with preferential shapes have been intensively studied for the last decade as this parameter controls the specific arrangement of the atoms at their surface, and therefore their catalytic properties toward many reactions. In recent publications we proposed an easy, fast and scalable method for the synthesis of preferential cubic Pt nanoparticles using water in oil (w/o) microemulsions [1,2]. To achieve the preferential structure, different surface modifiers, in this case strong acids such as HCl or H2SO4 were added to the aqueous phase of the microemulsion. As a result, nanoparticles with different sizes and different control over the arrangement of the atoms at their surface were obtained. In this work we have studied the effect of these surface structure modifiers and the use of different Pt precursors in the synthesis of bimetallic (PtRh) nanostructures with different Pt:Rh ratios. The shape of the nanoparticles (preferentially cubes) and the electrochemical behavior of the resulting samples toward reactions of interest in fuel cells, such as the oxidations of ammonia and ethanol (EtOH), were studied.
