Pollution through sewage water contamination, industrial fertilizer, and coal burning power plants can lead to degradation of water quality. Eutrophication, the ecosystem response as a result of the addition of excess nutrients, will further degrade water quality by depleting the oxygen in water. Nutrient levels are measured using HACH surface water kits and YSI probes to access eutrophic conditions. Purge-n-Trap coupled with GC/MS is used to test for potential gasoline additives and byproducts found in the surface water around well-populated, high traffic areas of Lake Sinclair. Liquid chromatography (HPLC) is used to search for commonly used pesticides and fertilizers. This presentation highlights the EPA protocol for water quality in recreational areas, method development and experimental design for the analysis, as well as the results of the project.<br/><br/>Livingston, Robert J.
