Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA’s) are potentially toxic, naturally occurring secondary products typically found in the plant family Boraginaceae. As part of a continuing alkaloid analysis of the plant family Boraginaceae, Omphalodes aliena collected from Brewster County, Texas, was analyzed to establish a GC-MS PA profile. Preliminary findings indicated the presence of eight different retronecine based PA’s: the major compounds being the monoester intermedine, m/z 299, and the diester echiumine, m/z 381, and their 3’-acetylated derivatives. Chromatographic PA profiles will be made with five previously examined species of Omphalodes generating a chemosystematic based tabular comparison.
