In the past few years, electronic cigarettes (E-cigs) have become a popular alternative to cigarettes. E-cigs consist of a heating coil that vaporizes a mixture of chemicals referred to as “e-juices” or “e-liquids”. The typical components of the e-liquids are glycerol (VG), propylene glycol (PG), and nicotine. A popular trend is the incorporation of flavor additives into the e-liquids. Recent studies have found that carbonyl compounds, such as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, are produced when VG and PG are exposed to the high temperature of the heating coil.  This research focuses on the effect that flavor additives have on the formation of carbonyl compounds when the e-liquid is exposed to high temperatures. Carbonyl compounds are analyzed using GC-FID.
