Ruthenium chloride (RuCl3) is a relatively unstudied catalyst with exciting synthetic potential. However, stringent pharmaceutical standards of ruthenium contamination (&lt;10ppm) significantly limit the possibility for applied RuCl3 catalysis in the pursuit of pharmaceutical targets. To combat this issue, RuCl3 has been immobilized on heterogeneous supports. Current immobilization technologies pose persistent issues and do not fully address concerns of ruthenium contamination. By developing comprehensive immobilization technologies, the accessibility of many medicinal synthetic targets is improved. Therefore, the primary focus of this undergraduate proposal is to develop and characterize an immobilized RuCl3 surface, which will demonstrate comparable reactivity to its homogenous analog, increased catalytic recyclability, and mitigate ruthenium contamination.
