Dinitrogen binding complexes have important applications ranging from understanding ammonia formation in the nitrogen cycle to separating N2 impurities from natural gas. A series of trans-octahedral iron(II) complexes of the formula [FeL2AB]n+ (A,B=Cl,H,CH3CN,N2), were synthesized containing polymerizable bis bidentate phosphine ligands with both alkyl and aryl substituents. The molecular compounds were characterized spectroscopically and their interaction with N2 probed. Select compounds were copolymerized with methacrylate derivatives to afford polymer stabilized iron complexes. Spectroscopic measurements indicate the coordination environment of the iron centers remains intact throughout the polymerization. Initial experiments investigating the thermodynamics and kinetics of the interaction of these materials with N2 will be presented.
