As the widespread production of biodiesel increases across the globe, so does the production of the glycerol waste byproduct. A majority of this byproduct is disposed of as chemical waste, but there are productive and environmentally friendly uses for this byproduct. Pure glycerol has been shown to produce deep eutectic solvents when paired with quaternary ammonium salts. Glycerol from acid-catalyzed biodiesel has been shown to produce these solvents with choline chloride as the ammonium salt. Herein, we prepare and examine the physical properties of deep eutectic solvents prepared with waste glycerol and a variety of different salts. Thus far, these DESs are showing promise as viable, environmentally friendly way to produce a value-added product and decrease glycerol waste.
