OER (Open Education Resources) are openly licensed, free, course materials for students. In this talk we will examine four attributes of a highly success OER project, OpenStax Chemistry, that can be used to facilitate reform: 1. Quality assurances, we will explore the sourcing and development model for this chemistry project. 2. Modularity, OER materials are "born digital", tagged by concepts, and are inherently modular. We will discuss examples of use in flipped classrooms, atoms first curricula, etc. 3. Access, we'll explain the CC BY terms of use and the free costs of these materials. 4. Straddling the divide. We'll discuss how OER can be used to straddle the divide between chemistry education researchers and the broader chemistry community.
