Nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) constitutes a family of lithium compounds with the composition LixNiyMnzCo(1-y-z) (0 &lt; x,y,z &lt; 1). NMC nanoparticles employed in cathode materials provide high battery performance at low-cost, resulting in NMCs being the battery of choice for power tools, e-bikes, and other electric powertrains. With rapid commercialization of NMC arises the essential need to assess the environmental impact of these materials. To better understand the effects of the material in the ecosystem, we investigate the interactions between model NMC material with Bacillus subtilis, a gram-positive, environmentally beneficial soil bacterium, via a high throughput microplate reader analysis assay. The toxicity mechanism to bacteria through ion dissolution of NMC is tested.
